Welcome to Federal Heights Second Grade! We are here to foster academic achievement for all students.
In reading, we support students in making the shift from ‘learning to read’ to ‘reading to learn’. Students participate in reading groups where they learn the skills to be successful readers. Students will continue to be supported with their decoding strategies while being taught numerous comprehension strategies. Students will explore a variety of genres in second grade. We will read fiction, realistic fiction, fairy tales, non-fiction text, biographies, poetry, and more. Students will participate in book discussions, partner activities, and complete written responses in order to help them grow as readers.
In math, students are instructed using the Everyday Math program. This program supports our district math curriculum. The strands of math that are covered are Geometry, Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Measurement and Data, and Number and Operations in Base 10. Students’ mathematical thinking will be engaged through direct instruction, small group work, partner work, independent practice, and math games.
Students are taught many different types of writing throughout Second Grade. During our writer’s workshop time students will write personal narratives, opinion pieces, and informational writing. Students also engage in writing throughout the day to explain their thinking in reading, math, science, and social studies.
We strive to teach our students to become rigorous independent thinkers and learners. Have a great Second Grade year!
